HISTORICAL OVERVIEW

During the week of celebrations of the 45th Anniversary of STATHS, a group of concerned past students from home and the diaspora held a meeting on April 9, 2006, at the Ashanti Vegetarian Restaurant at the scenic Hope Gardens.  The purpose of this meeting was to discuss the establishment of an organization that would ultimately be of financial support and benefit to STATHS for future years.

From the records, the group of honourable, diligent, and service-oriented past students present at this meeting was:

  • Sybil Jones
  • Patricia Lacey
  • Laniel Grant
  • Errol Elliston
  • David Jamieson
  • Elaine Salmon
  • Raymond McNaught
  • Lorenzo Gordon
  • Errol Barnaby
  • Desmond Baker
  • Donald Marshall
  • Ron Ingleton
  • Barrington Johnson
  • Winsome Heslop

From this inaugural meeting of the minds, the idea to establish a Foundation/Trust Fund was conceived.

This group of past students formulated the general objectives of the Foundation/Trust Fund:

  1. To establish a Capital Endowment Growth Fund through the financial contributions of affiliate Alumni Groups, past students, and friends of the school.
  2. A base amount of $10 million Jamaican was projected as a principal target Investment of Funds in diverse financial US$ and JA$ portfolios to realize maximum yield.
  3. Interest accrued from funds invested while maturing would, over time, be used to support projects, physical and social infrastructure development, and other varied educational endeavors at the school that would impact at least 70% of the school population.

The group also decided to open two bank accounts:   JA$ and US$ Accounts. It was suggested and agreed that each person contributes an amount of JA$5000.00 towards opening the bank accounts and initiating the Trust’s activities.

To administer, manage and ensure good governance of the organization, the participants at the meeting identified and selected the following persons to form the core management team and Board of Trustees.

PERFORMANCE (2006 -2021)

The following highlight the performance of STATHS TRUST over the past fifteen (15) years

  1. The first activity of STATHS TRUST was to facilitate and support the re-establishment of the STATHS Alumni – Jamaica Chapter. A joint official launch was planned, and this resulted in an event, the launch of St Andrew Technical High School Trust & the First Honour Banquet on July 3, 2009, at the Terra-Nova Hotel, Kingston, Jamaica.
  2. In 2010, a request for a loan in the amount of JA$ 200,000.00 was made to the 50th Anniversary Celebration Planning Committee of the Andrew Technical High School, which was granted.
  3. Financial grant to support the Construction of a Gymnasium at the Andrew Technical High School Amount: JA$ 800,000.00
  4. Financial grant for the start-up activities of the Inaugural W Isaac Henry Track & Field Development Meet in 2015. Amount – JA$ 350,000.00
  5. Financial grant to support the Feeding Programme at the school in September 2010. Amount – CAN$ 500.00
  6. In 2020, a Financial grant to support the Water Tank Project in the amount of- US$ 3000.00

In the formative years, enthusiasm was high, and the TRUST was able to solicit contributions/donations fairly briskly.  However, over the last seven years, the circumstances of contributors and other factors such as the rapid turnover of leadership and governance at the school had negatively impacted the growth of the funds.

The Trust has been sustained over the last 15 years through stalwarts leaders Mr. Barry Johnson, Dr. Lorenzo Gordon, Mrs. Elaine Salmon-Brousers, and Dr. Ron Ingleton.

STATHS TRUST celebrated its 15th Anniversary in April 2021, amid the COVID 19 Pandemic, and commemorated the 60th Anniversary of STATHS with an Inaugural Virtual 5K Run/Walk event.

As we advance, we expect the growth of our “Capital Endowment Growth Fund” to be expanded through the financial contributions of affiliate Alumni Groups, past students, and friends of the school.
